Erg weight adjustment calculatorThis calculator will allow you to weight-adjust your erg scores, normalising to a chosen weight, and taking into account the true weight of your cox, boat and blades. The calculation is taken from Anu's rowing pages, equation (8.5). The "q" factor models the way the wetted surface area of the boat changes as its weight increases. Anu quotes it as "(2/3) for a single scull, but closer to (1/2) for crew boats." Select whether your erg score is time or distance, enter the score, the rower's weight and adjust any other parameters as necessary, then press "Weight Adjust!". The calculator works in metric units. To convert from Imperial units to metric units, use the converter on the right. It is a separate entity from the weight adjustment calculator, and may be used independently. It should be noted that the weight adjustment is modelling the relationship between erg score and boat speed, rather than simply scaling the erg score up with the mass of the athlete. Thus it takes into account the deadweight the athlete must pull along in the boat, and also the increased drag associated with increased mass. For more details, the reader is referred to the excellent discussion on Anu's webpages, linked above. |
