HRR Qualifying:
29 June 2001
The 1st VIII trained extremely hard for Henley, but the heavens decided to make it a tough challenge for the crew, striking down Jon Sheppard with illness on the Tuesday before Friday's qualification. Luckily James Yates could step into the boat for two days of training until Jon was able to row again. Unfortunately tough competition meant that the crew failed to qualify for the Temple, despite a superb row in qualifying to produce a competitive time of 7:09 into a strong headwind.
Marlow Regatta:
23 June 2001
Exams prevented the Henley crew from training on the water until two days before Marlow Regatta, held at Dorney Lake, and although the training outings went well a very disappointing performance on the water left them trailing third in their heat in the Senior 3 VIIIs behind Exeter College and Pangbourne.
Eights 2001:
23-26 May
A mixed bag for SJCBC in Eights. Five crews were entered, the Women's 2nd VIII and Men's 3rd VIII successfully rowing on but being punished by starting in front of fast Schools crews. The Women's 1st VIII's results did not reflect the amount of training they had put in, but with many new faces in their crew this year they should have a strong crew in 2002. The Men's 2nds managed to hit the boat in front of them every day, but klaxons and myopic umpires served to deny them two of their well-deserved bumps. The 1st VIII bumped early on Wednesday and Thursday, but were chasing a strong St. Peter's crew for the last two days. Although on both days they made up much ground, on a shortened Eights course (finishing at Jesus boathouse) they were unable to bump them.
Bedford Regatta:
12/05/01
A disappointing day for the 1st VIII, who entered Senior 2 and Senior 3 categories here. The first race of the day was against Balliol in Senior 2, and SJCBC failed to perform, losing considerable distance off the start and never really finding a rhythm. Although a comfortable victory over Merton ensued in the first round of Senior 3, the second round against a determined St. Edward's School boat proved to be much more difficult, and again the crew found itself trying to make up ground all the way. However, occasional patches of brilliance showed through which should stand them in good stead for Eights.
Wallingford Regatta:
06/05/01
Having won at Evesham the day before, the 1st VIII were unable to enter Senior 4 and with no space available in the higher divisions, the College Championship was the only event they were able to contest. Multi-lane racing proved tremendous fun, and in the heat SJCBC finished a tight third, a whisker behind Trinity and only a length behind Exeter College, but comprehensively beating New College and LMH. Oriel and Christchurch, who had been given byes to the final, failed to show and so the line-up was unchanged later on in the day. St. John's went one better and pushed Exeter very hard, finishing just under 3/4 of a length behind with no other boats challenging us. For a picture of the post-race celebrations, click here.
Evesham Regatta:
05/05/01

The newly-formed 1st VIII went to Evesham with one crew change from the successful Torpid, looking to prove their mettle in their first regatta of the season. In Senior 3, a victory over Monmouth School set them up for the rest of the day's racing. Next in the Senior 4 category, the 1st VIII faced Exeter Rowing Club, and won easily, rowing over at a relaxed rate of 34. The middle of the day proved to be a chance to relax as tight scheduling and the continuing successes of both the S3 and S4 opposition crews meant that the finals were contested at the end of the day in very close succession. Against Cheltenham College in Senior 4 SJCBC got off to a flying start, eating into their initial disadvantage due to the stagger. Cheltenham came back strongly, and there was little in it after the boats had emerged from the corner onto the final straight. There was no more than a canvas either way when one of the Cheltenham blades became entangled with a buoy, depriving the crews of the exhilarating race to the line which has looked certain to follow, and handing the victory to St. John's. Shortly afterwards came the race against Birmingham University in Senior 3. Unfortunately the 1st VIII could not quite duplicate their earlier levels of performance and despite a good row got beaten by a good length. Nevertheless, there were pots to celebrate in the bar that evening.

Head of the River:
17/03/01
Riding on the back of Torpids success, the 1st Torpid went to the Head of the River hoping to improve on a disappointing row in 2000. Unfortunately two members of the Torpid were unable to row, but Argonauts Ben Ollivere and Peter Ward ably filled their seats. St. John's performed well, coming well up the list of Oxbridge colleges and finishing 190th; a considerable achievement and a marked improvement on the previous year's performance.
